Jewellery brands have been reporting record sales - it seems as though we've all cottoned on to the subtle and easy way to update our look in a seconds. This is a prime example of the dress-it-up, dress-it-down power of accessories that fashion experts are always extolling.

Orders have been flooding, with “people sending jewellery as gifts,” admits Motley, “or treating themselves. We had so many people telling us how joyful they felt when they wore the jewellery and how much energy it gave them.”

She’s not being flippant when she refers to energy. “Because it’s so tactile, jewellery can help shift your mood.” One of the designers on Motley, Charlotte Garnett (surely one of the most perfect names for a jeweller), has created a modern version of worry beads, using onyx and jade, which reputedly have restorative properties, and incorporates disc ridges and spindles into earrings and rings that are meant to be stroked or twiddled. This is not about status but emotions. “The traditional ideas around buying jewellery – to show off your bank account – just feel so outdated,” says Lever.
